BIOGRAPHY:
Winifred Margaret Dengate (Winnie) was born to Charles and Annie Elizabeth Dengate on the 6 November 1885 in Peasmarsh, East Sussex. She was baptised 24 January 1886 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Peasmarsh. Her father Charles was a labourer and a baker in Peasmarsh.

Winifred Margaret Dengate began at Peasmarsh school on the 30 April 1889 and left on the 25 April 1896. At school with Winnie were her brothers Frederick Richard Dengate and Charles Henry Dengate, and her cousin Grace Dengate.

The 1891 census shows Winifred aged 5 living with her parents and brothers Frederick and Charles Henry at 3 Pond House, Peasmarsh. Charles is recorded working as a baker.
Winifred worked for many years as a Sunday school teacher at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Peasmarsh, alongside her father Charles Dengate.

Winifred Margaret Dengate and Thomas Robert Addy were the first people to marry in the new Wesleyan Chapel in Main Street, Peasmarsh on the 9 of July 1906. Witnesses to the marriage were Winifred's father Charles Dengate and Nellie Offen. At the time of their marriage Tom was living in Station Road, Lydd while Winifred was living and working at Stream Farm as a nursemaid to a boy there.

After their marriage, Tom and Winifred set up home in Lydd where Tom worked as a signalman at Lydd train station, a job he held for the subsequent 39 years. The couple lived for a long time in Alma Cottage, Lydd where they raised their family. The couple had 6 children; Charles William Henry Addy, Thomas Robert Addy, Frederick Clement Addy, Arthur James Addy, John Robert Addy and Maurice Alfred Addy. Thomas Robert Addy died aged 15 months on the 9 January 1911.

Tom Addy died in Ashford Hospital aged 75 years on the 4 December 1951 of heart failure and bronchitis. His son Maurice informed of the death. Tom Addy was buried in Lydd Cemetery.
Winifred Margaret Addy died of cancer in her sons home of 49 The Green, Lydd on the 23 April 1978 aged 92 years. She was buried with her husband in Lydd Cemetery.

The grave inscription reads, "In loving memory of Thomas Addy died 4th December 1951 aged 75 years. Also of his wife Winifred Margaret died 23rd April 1978 aged 92 years."
