BIOGRAPHY:

Susannah Dengate was born to James and Sarah Dengate on the 14 March 1822. She was baptised in St Mary's Church, Northiam on the 9 June 1822.

Susannah Dengate worked in Dover, Kent for over 45 years for the Coleman family as a domestic servant. Her Aunt Harriet Elgar (Nee Dengate) also lived in the area with her husband Henry and daughter Harriet. When Susannah died, her will bequeaths the sum of £238 4s 9d to her cousin, Harriet Elgar (jnr).

Susannah Dengate died 22 July 1889 in "The Shrubbery", Dover, Kent, aged 67 years. Harriet McDonald was present at her death. Susannah died of carcinoma and exhaustion - which at that time would indicate a lingering death.

Susannah was buried 25 July in Cowgate Cemetery, Dover, Kent with her aunt and uncle Harriet and Henry Elgar. Harriet Elgar (jnr.) was also buried with them upon her death in 1901.

The grave inscription reads, "In affectionate remembrance of Harriet Elgar who died 4th May 1869 aged 79 years, widow of Henry Elgar, who died 4th January 1847 aged 58 years. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. Also in memory of Susannah Dengate, niece of the above Harriet Elgar, who died 22nd July 1889, aged 67 years; Having lived much esteemed 45 years in the family of John Coleman of the Priory, Dover. I rest my soul _? Jesus the spotless lamb of God. Also of Harriet Elgar _? daughter of the late _? Harriet Elgar _? _? Born 18th July 1832, died 26th April 1901."
