BIOGRAPHY:
Mabel Dengate was born 16 August 1892 in Hastings, East Sussex to Ernest Alfred and Agnes Lucy Dengate. Mabel lived for some time at 69 Manor Road and before marriage she worked for Foster's Newsagents.

Mabel Dengate married Harry Chandler in 1914 in the Salvation Iron Fort in Hastings.

Both Mabel, (like many of her close family) and Harry were regular members of the Salvation Army, attending the Iron Fort corp in Hastings. She also sung with the songsters at Hastings Salvation Army, whilst Harry played in the band and held many positions including Band Sergeant, Young People's Sergeant Major, Treasurer, Secretary and Corps Sergeant Major. Harry served in the medical corps during World War One, and after the war held various jobs including; for Kyle's bakery and greengrocer's with his own pony and cart; Salvation Army insurances, and a credit draper for Wylies (the company eventually sold to the Dengate family). Harry and Mabel had three daughters; Dora, Audrey and Eileen.
The couple held their Golden Wedding celebration in the Young People's hall at the Salvation Army Citadel on the 26 December 1964.

Harry Chandler died 14 August 1971 in St Helen's Hospital after having his leg amputated in. He was cremated at Hastings Crematorium following a service at Hastings Citadel Salvation Army.
Mabel died in St Helen's Hospital, Hastings in March 1982 and, following a service at the Hastings Salvation Army Citadel on the 19 March, was cremated at Hastings Crematorium. Her ashes were interred in her parents grave.

The grave inscription reads, "A devoted wife and mother, Agnes Lucy Dengate, rewarded October 12th 1930, aged 70 years. Sweet peace the gift of God's love. Also her husband, Ernest Alfred Dengate, who passed away, March 15th 1941, aged 83 years. Reunited. [Separate headstone] Also their daughter, Ethel Dengate, 1887-1975."
