Hannah Dengate was born 13 October 1871 in Peasmarsh, East Sussex to Thomas and Frances Dengate. She was baptised 7 January 1872 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Peasmarsh.

The 1881 Census shows Hannah as a nine year-old scholar living at home with her parents and siblings on Main Street, Peasmarsh, where she spent her childhood. Hannah was witness to her brother Fred Dengate's marriage to Lizzie Brigland on 18 June 1890 in Eastbourne Register Office.
