BIOGRAPHY:

Frederick Richard Dengate was born to Charles and Annie Elizabeth Dengate on the 18 November 1889 in Peasmarsh, East Sussex.  He was baptised 9 February 1890 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Peasmarsh.  His father Charles was a labourer and a baker in Peasmarsh.

The 1891 census shows Frederick Richard aged one year old, living with his parents and brothers and sisters Charles Henry, Annie Elizabeth and Clara Isabel on Main Street, Peasmarsh.

Frederick Richard Dengate began at Peasmarsh school on the 3 July 1893 and left 21 March 1901, "gone to work".  At school with Frederick were his sisters Annie Elizabeth and Clara Isabel Dengate and their cousin Grace Dengate.  Frederick suffered from a mental disorder which left him with writing and reading difficulties and needing to be looked left after by his parents.  Fred's sister Annie Elizabeth also looked after him at her home in Lydd during the early 1930s.

The 1901 census shows Frederick living at home with his parents and brothers and sisters in Main Street, Peasmarsh.  His father Charles was working as a journeyman baker (paid by the day) - as did many of the Dengate family.

Frederick worked for some time with his brother Charles Henry in his wood yard in Peasmarsh, making stakes and fence posts.  He was a part of the Peasmarsh brass band, collecting money when they played at fetes and fairs.  His brother Charles Henry played in the band, then took over as band-master when the previous band-master left.  He did not marry or have children and died in April 1962.  He was cremated 30 April 1962 in Hastings Crematorium and his ashes strewn in the garden of remembrance.
