BIOGRAPHY:

Evelyn Naomi Dengate was born to James and Naomi Dengate on the 19 March 1898 in Sedlescombe and was baptised on the 23 April 1898 in St John the Baptist Church, Sedlescombe.

The 1901 Census shows Evelyn as a two-year-old living with her parents and brother Jim in Brickyard Cottage, Sedlescombe.  During the First World War the family were still living in Brickyard Cottage, and it was here that they learned of their son Jim's death in Karachi, Pakistan.

Sometime between the First World War and 1927, the family resided in Springfield Cottage, Brede Lane, Sedlescombe.

In 1927 Evelyn's brother Frank Dengate and father James built a home for the family called 'The Haven' beside the road in Sedlescombe with commanding views of the surrounding countryside.  Frank and his sisters Rosa May and Nellie Margaret lived in the house their whole lives.

Evelyn Naomi Wright married Thomas David Wright on the 30 August 1930 in St John the Baptist Church, Sedlescombe.  James Dengate and Susan Ann Lovell were witness to the marriage.  Thomas Wright was listed as a chauffeur at the time of his marriage, a job he held his whole life.  Evelyn worked for part of her life as a cook.

The 1939 Kelly's Directory of Hastings lists Thomas and Evelyn Wright as living in Hermitage Cottage, Old Roar Road, Hastings.  By 1950 they are living at 164 Harrow Lane, Hastings, where they remained at least until 1966.

Thomas David Wright died 24 September 1973 in Hastings, East Sussex and was buried in Hastings Cemetery.

The grave inscription reads, "In loving memory of Thomas Wright who died 24th September 1973 aged 78 years."

In 1981 Evelyn moved to St Peter's Grange Rest Home, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards where she lived for the remainder of her life.  Her sister Nellie Margaret Dengate (Meg) also moved into the home in 1992.  The proprietors of St Peter's Grange at that time, Mr. and Mrs. Elam described Evelyn as "a lovely lady".

Evelyn Naomi Wright died 27 March 1995 age 97 at St Peter's Grange, Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards-On-Sea.  She was cremated at Hastings Crematorium and her ashes interred in the grave of her husband.
