BIOGRAPHY:
Ethel Caroline Dengate was born 9 September 1887 in Hastings, East Sussex to Ernest Alfred and Agnes Lucy Dengate.
The 1891 census shows Ethel as a three year-old, living with her parents, two sisters and brother at 55 St George's Road, Hastings.
By 1901 the family had moved to 69 Manor Road, Hastings where Ethel was working as a domestic servant.

Ethel never married and lived for a long time with her father, Ernest Alfred Dengate in the family home of 69 Manor Road, Hastings, but before her death lived with her sister Elsie and husband Jack at 131 Hughenden Road, Hastings. Ethel had been a life-long Salvationist, attending the Salvation Army Citadel in Hastings with many members of her family.
Ethel died 15 April 1975 in St Mary's Rest Home, Hastings. Her funeral was conducted by Brigadier Dora Chandler, her niece at the Salvation Army Citadel, Hastings, on the 21st April followed by cremation and her interment with her parents at Hastings Cemetery.

The grave inscription reads, "A devoted wife and mother, Agnes Lucy Dengate, rewarded October 12th 1930, aged 70 years. Sweet peace the gift of God's love. Also her husband, Ernest Alfred Dengate, who passed away, March 15th 1941, aged 83 years. Reunited. [Separate headstone] Also their daughter, Ethel Dengate, 1887-1975."
