Charles Henry Dengate (Harry) was born to Charles and Annie Elizabeth Dengate on the 11 September 1877 in Peasmarsh, East Sussex. He was baptised 16 October 1887 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Peasmarsh. His father Charles was a labourer and a baker in Peasmarsh.

The 1891 census shows Charles Henry aged three, living with his parents and brothers and sisters Frederick Richard, Annie Elizabeth and Clara Isabel on Main Street, Peasmarsh.
Charles Henry Dengate started at Peasmarsh school on the 4 of May 1891. At Peasmarsh school at the same time as Charles Henry were his brother Frederick Dengate, sisters Winifred Margaret Dengate, Annie Elizabeth Dengate and cousin Grace Dengate. He left school on the 7 of April 1899.

The 1901 census shows Charles Henry living at home with his parents and brothers and sisters in Main Street, Peasmarsh. His father Charles was working as a journeyman baker (paid by the day) - as did many of the Dengate family. Charles Henry was working as a thirteen year old journeyman butcher.
