BIOGRAPHY :
Archie Dengate was born 1 September 1898 in Peasmarsh, East Sussex to Alfred Russell and Grace Ellen Dengate. He was baptised 23 October 1898 in St Peter and St Paul's Church, Peasmarsh.

Archie (known as Dick) began at Peasmarsh school on the 5 May 1903, aged 5 and left on the 21st October 1910 with his sister and two brothers when the family moved to Whitstable, Kent.
Archie served in France during World War 1, and it was around this time in Sheffield that he met Alice Maud Athgy. The couple married on the 14 February 1918 in Sheffield. They had 4 children; George Alfred who only lived to one year, Kathleen, Moira Joan and Irene.
The Kent Directory shows Archie and family living at 45 Acton Road, Whitstable between 1930 and 1934.

In the late 1930s Archie owned a lorry and undertook various transport jobs. He, Alice and family moved for a short time to Scotland, then to Kingsbury, Middlesex in late 1936 / early 1937 where his brothers Cecil and Cyril lived. They moved back again to Whitstable in the 1950s.

Archie died end of 17 April 1962 at 34 Argyle Road, Whitstable aged 63 years. He was cremated 24 April 1962 at Barham Crematorium and his ashes were interred in his parents grave in Whitstable Cemetery.

Alice Dengate died in Whitstable in 1978 and was cremated at Barham Crematorium.

The grave inscription reads, "Sacred memories my beloved husband Alfred Dengate died 4 March 1951 aged 76 years. Reunited Mum. Grace E. Dengate died 24 May 1960 aged 82 years." Also interred in the grave are the ashes of their two children, Archie and Cyril Dengate also the ashes of Helen Louise Dengate and Jean Dengate. The grave to the left of is that of Archie's sister, Violet Winifred and her husband Cecil Charles Rowden.
