Introduction Page

This website is dedicated to the memory of my father: Denis Leslie Goodwin 1946 - 2006

Welcome to the Dengate website, which was launched in April 2002 and now contains well over 500 pages of information on the Dengate family.  The Dengate and Dungate names were registered in 2005 with the Guild of One-Name Studies in an effort to extend the research further and to offer the findings to a greater number of people.

Since 2007 I have been publishing quarterly eJournals which feature the most up-to-date information on the Dengate family.  Essentially what this means is that there are two levels of information people interested in the Dengate family can access: this website which provides basic and free information or the Dengate eJournals which have much more detailed information on the family which is not available on the website.  Proceeds from the eJournals are used to fund further research.  Click the Journal tab for further information.

If you are new to this website then I would suggest using the links above to navigate your way around.  Below you will find brief explanations of what you will find on each page.

History - This page has details of the potential origins of the Dengate / Dungate families and how the family name has spread across the globe.  This part of the website will be added to in the coming weeks to include maps and further information on statistics and distribution.

Family Trees - This page features many Dengate and some Dungate family trees.  It is arranged approximately in chronologically order: 'Tree tops' (1600-1790), 'Lower branches' (1790-1890) and 'Twigs' (1890+).  If you don't know to which tree you belong then click on the People Page and try and locate your ancestor there.

People Page - This is an alphabetical list of everyone featured on the various family trees.  Women are listed under their maiden names.  Clicking on the person's name will take you to their position on the family tree. From there you can view their antecedents and, if applicable, their descendants.  Anybody with their name in blue has further information about them in the form of a biography, which very often features photographs of the person.

New & Updated - This page has approximately a rolling year of new and updated pages on the Dengate website, allowing you to keep up-to-date with changes to the site between visits.

Journal - Keep up-to-date with the latest news, family trees, biographies and articles on the Dengate family by subscribing to the Dengate eJournal.  This costs 14 per year and all proceeds from these are reinvested into further research.  For example, this year I have used part of the money to fund two complete DNA tests, not to mention the purchase of many birth, marriage and death certificates and wills.  The Journal has more detailed information and includes biographies and photographs not included on this website.

Archive - This page has links to a range of Dengate-related archive material, for example national births, marriages, deaths, wills and adoptions.  Also here you will find transcripts of some parish registers and memorial inscriptions of Dengate gravestones.

DNA Project - This page offers information on the Dengate / Dungate DNA project which has been running since 2006.  Several Dengate males have been tested against several Dungate males with the result that the two families have a definite link.  I am the Assistant Group Coordinator of this project.

Hastings at War 1939-1945 - This links to a sub-section of the website not strictly to do with the Dengate family, although the book 'Hastings at War' (2005) features several members of the family, as does the follow up, 'Hastings: Wartime Memories and Photographs' (2008).

Links - This page provides links to external websites that may be of interest to those researching the Dengate / Dungate family, i.e. forums and discussion boards.

Copyright - Please read this page carefully before attempting to remove any material from this website.  This is very important as some of the information, photographs, etc are held by third parties.

I hope you enjoy looking around the website.  If you have any comments to make about the website or any questions about the family then please email me.  I would also welcome any new information, photographs, etc -

Nathan Dylan Goodwin BA MA
